An after-training learning resource (workshop, DVD set and workbook) for continuing skill development in MI

FINALLY!

An alternative to the plague of the "Drive-By Training"!

As budgets get tighter and the need for cost-effective learning increases, new approaches to "knowledge transfer" are essential for organizations who want to focus on sustainability. Members of our training group have a strong belief that organizations simply cannot afford to allow workshop training to be where the learning process  stops. And - that idea is not just a "belief". Good evidence abounds that if all you do is "throw some classroom training at people" - you will likely need to throw it at them again, and again, and again - to maintain the behaviour change that is initiated in workshops.Spraying a group of people with an onslaught of "magic bullets"  - in the hope that some of them "hit"in the right places, is simply not an effective (much less cost-effective) way of doing business. That is why we created the "Practice Pieces" learning resource. It offers a practical solution to those organizations that want to move toward creating  customized and sustainable "Learning System" for M.I.

Foundation Concepts and Skills in MI
Introductory Level MI Courses

The MI approach helps clients to strengthen client motivation for making specific health-behaviour changes. It is heavily influenced by the client-centered tradition of helping. MI  combines the strategic component of guiding and involves asking, listening, evoking and informing. It  helps clients to engage in active change plans. MI does not "implant" motivation. Instead, MI serves to create a safe and easy space for motivation to grow. In a similar way, this workshop involves asking, listening, evoking and informing to help plant the seeds that take root to create the foundation for MI skill development.

This 3-day workshop provides an excellent mix of education and opportunities for skill practice so as to maximize learning-transfer to workplace applications. It often serves as the foundation for the process by which people learn how to learn to apply MI. To accomplish that, our experience is that learners need to:

1. Know about MI (Undertsand the underlying principles, practices, and concepts)

2. Practice with MI (experiment, obtain feedback, make adjustments and fine tune)

3. Consolidate and Integrate MI into their daily work ("Get" MI)

MI Aerobics

This three-day workshop leaves those with a previous background in this approach feeling like they have stretched every M.I. muscle in their repertoire! We begin with a brief overview of the spirit and intent of Motivational Interviewing, and a recap of the Transtheoretical Model of Change. Then, a menu of options is provided, from which participants can choose up to 8 "workout sessions" (approximately 1 hour each) to enhance various interviewing competencies.

Course Outline:

  • Supervised practice sessions (in pairs or triads)
  • Video-tape peer-review sessions
  • Small group discussion based on video demo’s by Dr. Miller and others
  • "Fish bowl" demonstrations by the instructor
  • "Practical mistake-making sessions"
  • Preparation for real-life applications when you get yourself into a "trap"
  • Case conferences of actual client scenarios where counsellors or clients feel "stuck" (confidentiality guidelines provided prior to course)
  • Issues in the application of MI approaches to group work
  • Incorporating M.I. into "Family/Employer Intervention Training"

There’s lots of room for fun, experimentation, and wild mistake-making in this jam-packed three days! MI Aerobics is a safe place to learn why counselling is called a "practice" and not a "perfect"!

Facilitation Skills for Small Group Practice with MI
The best way to ensure the learning continues after the training concludes!

This workshop supplies the cure for the plague of "drive-by-training"! That's important - because the developers of MI note that learning the approach entails a similar process to that of learning to play a musical instrument. Three things are required:

  1. An initial lesson or two
  2. Practice with what was demonstrated and taught in the initial lesson, and
  3. Feedback on the practice

If the only thing that a new learner did when trying to learn to play the piano was to take the inittial lesson, s/he might develop some knowledge about the instrument - but would be unlikely to develop the actual skills required to make the learning translate into skill. That's where training in Peer Coaching comes in!

(Self-Assessment of MI Skills Using MITI 3.1)
This is the workshop where the "lightbulb moments" occur for many participants. It is a fun place to discover what's working well for you and what can be fine-tuned . You'll discover great ideas for how to enhance your MI performance and to keep learning - from every client you see!

Sometimes, when workshop participants return to their workplaces after a training session, they wonder "is what I am now doing really MI? Some ask themselves "how would I know if I was doing "real MI" as opposed to just good reflective listening, or sound basic counselling practice?"More importantly, those who want to obtain real competency in the MI approach will ask themselves "What behaviours do I need to "tweak" in order to get better outcomes with my clients? How can I develop more fidelity with the standards for competent use of MI?"

We all know that nobody can't learn to modify their behaviour, including counselling behaviour, without good quality, accurate feedback. Still. sometimes obtaining that kind of feedback can be a little intimidating, if not downright scarey! The question becomes how to obtain feedback which is devoid of judgement, evaluation, and criticism, in a way that will inform better adherence to MI skill - and that will allow for some fun in the process.

In this 3-day workshop, you will learn how to use a standardized "coding" instrument (the MITI 3.1 Coding Template) to assess the degree of match between what you are doing when you are "doing MI" - and what "real MI" invloves. There is plenty of opportunity for fun ways of finding traps, pitfalls, and quirky habits that get in the way of  better MI practice. At the conclusion of the 3-days, you will also have a practical, individualized self-directed learning plan in your hands for how you could optimize your MI performance.

Skills for Eliciting & Responding To Change Talk

Two essential skills in developing competency in MI are (1) learning to "listen up" for the language of change that suggests clients are becoming more ready for commitment and action planning, and (2) learning how to elicit such language from clients. "Change Talk" is the "gold nugget" for which all the "mining" in MI is designed. It is the "pay dirt" and the "pay off" for all the hard work of using skillful MI to strategically guide clients in the direction of a target behaviour. Change Talk is the the fuel that drives willingness to tap into more concrete action planning and goal setting. Without the ability to recognize change talk and "work with it" as a way to harness motivation, there is a tendency to simply use MI skills to be a great listener, and to develop great rapport with clients, but with no resulting behaviour change!

This 2 day skill-based workshop is designd to  help participants

(a) recognize the language of change when it manifests in an MI session,

(b) elicit change talk from clients when it is not evolving more naturally, and

(c) what the do with it when it manifests in the MI conversation

When Particpants Supply The Pieces (Effective Presentations)
Not all professional helping occurs in the context of individual interviews. Often, helping interventions are delivered in group presentations and psycho-eductional workshops. In such cases, the question becomes "how can we provide information, advice, and enhance motivation and still maintain the spirit of collaboration, support for client autonomy and evocation and avoid "installing" information into clients - before they are ready, willing and able to receive it?

We have been asked, many times, how best to present information and "material" to clients in a way that enhances motivation for change - or - at the very least - isn't a complete "turn-off"! Paul has facilitated workshops and information sessions for well over 5000 people and has a wealth of knowledge and skill related to how to make client presentationsuseful, productive, creative, fun, and impactful. His presentations are consistently rated as "excellent" by participants all across Canada, and he often presents to rave reviews at conferences and other large gatherings. The success of Paul's teaching is due, in large part, to the fact that people WANT to take his courses. They look forward to them - for reasons that need not be a secret! This custom designed, agency-tailored workshop is designed to allow participants to understand and practice:

1. how to "build" a presentation or a sequence of related presentations

2. how to present with an emphasis on engendering the spirit and principles of Motivational Interviewing "habits" as they apply to making effective presentations

3. how to assess and enhance readiness, willingness and ability-to-learn in clients who will be attending information presentations

4. how to address diverse groups whose membership contains people in varius stages of change and readiness

4. how to measure outcomes related to group presentations

5. how and when to add "snap, crackle and pop" to presentations (and when to hold back)

Coding MI Interviews

Most all new learners coming out of MI workshops are energized in the awareness that despite the fact that it is an effective intervention with many client groups, it is also very easy to understand! We all know, however, that "understanding" MI and "practicing" MI are two different things!  Clearly, if the goal is to enhance practice, it is not enough just to "learn about" this approach. That's where the "Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity Coding System" (MITI 3.1) comes in.

The MITI 3.1 is an easy to use standardized assessment instrument that can be enormously helpful in  facilitating applied skill in MI. In this 3-day workshop, participants will learn how to "code" for the degree of fidelity that MI interview samples have with the required practice thresholds for MI "proficiency" and "competency". After a solid degree of comfort is achieved in using the tool itself, we then help particiants examine how to use feedback from the MITI 3.1 for skill enhancement, coaching peers, clinical supervision, and for achieved advanced-level skill in the MI approach.

A Workshop In MI Practices for Para-Professionals
Supervision of New MI Learners

Teach a learner how to fish and you help them become proficient. But help them to become a fish - to think like a fish, to swim like a fish, and to understand what it is like to BE a fish - and they move from proficiency to competency! Mentoring and peer coaching in the process of learning MI helps learners swim in a whole different league than those who have only been "trained?              Our curriculum design and instructional development team specializes in designing learning systems for organizations that want to maintain and continually improve their practice of Motivational Interviewing. The result is a self-sustaining program of learning and performance coaching facilitated by your own people.

This 2-day course helps supervisors to ensure the "vision" component of supervision stays true to the goals, mandate, and focus of your organization – while supporting a work team that produces high-quality and measurable results.
