Paul Burke Training & Consulting Group is a learning organization . We are a growing team of highly experienced clinicians, adult-educators, curriculum design professionals and organizational learning consultants who support each other in the pursuit of excellence in how we work as MI Trainers. We also help others to learn to teach and practice MI. Together, we are an ever-growing group of trainers and consultants who provide an easy-access touchstone in Canada for "whatever-it-takes support" for the learning of Motivational Interviewing. We work to embrace the spirit and complexity within the art and science of MI and to model and translate it for learners. The way we work helps learners to hold the essence of MI - even while they are learning it! We develop and provide customized training approaches for MI applications in concurrent disorders treatment (mental health and addicitions), tobacco cessation, problem gambling treatment, health interventions and patient education, and chronic condition self-management. And - training is just the "front-end" of what we offer!
Our East Coast (Canada) Tour Starts on April 5th!
We're offering 3 of our most in-demand courses in three Maritime provinces this April. See below for details!

We Help Organizations Learn-How-To-Learn MI!
In addition to a comprehensive line-up of introductory, intermediate and advanced courses in M.I., we specialize in helping larger organizations develop cost-effective, self-sustaining and self-perpetuating "learning systems" for the promotion and practice of Motivational Interviewing. Helping organizations "learn how to learn" MI is all about what we do – and it is all about how we do it. A key function of our multidisciplinary team involves helping organizations develop practical approaches to coach for ongoing MI practice. We know that helping people learn MI requires planning well "beyond training". Our emphasis is helping launch "communities of learning" where the emphasis becomes, after training, workplace-based practice and follow up. In this way, we go beyond training, to approach learning in a whole new light. That is not just our slogan - it is our mission.
Motivational Interviewing is a way of communicating with people and guiding them as they construct and strengthen their motivation for positive change: It's all about what we do; It's all about how we do it.
Motivational Interviewing is a way of communicating. We not only teach the skill, but we employ it in our training methods. In addition, our trainers are noted for their interactive, entertaining, humorous and creative approaches to facilitating learning.
We offer a highly regarded series of introductory and advanced level MI courses for counsellors, social workers, corrections personnel, health educators, addictions professionals, psychologists and clergy.
The course lineup includes the full range of MI learning, from an introduction to foundation concepts to advanced level practice and skills enhancement workshops that include coaching and feedback to improve MI fidelity.
Beyond Training
Attending workshops and being trained are not the same thing. We know that people get some solid exposure to MI through participating in workshops. After that, they need to develop a plan for how they will integrate that new learning into skills training and practice.
There are three interacting dimensions of competency development:
1) initial concept/practice expsoure (workshops)
2) skills rehearsal and training via regular workplace-based practice (training)
3) coaching and feedback on practice performance (supervision and peer coaching).
Thus, in addition to our regular
series of courses, we specialize designing cost-effective sustainable learning systems for agencies wishing to implement the practice and ongoing training of Motivational interviewing within their own organizations.
These custom-designed systems enable learner agencies to become effective "learning organizations" by using the organization itself as a part of the process of learning M.I. Not only is it the most effective way to get great outcomes in staff development, it is the most cost-effective way to go about it as well!

TRAINER DEVELOPMENT PROJECT IN ONTARIO
(Right to left in photo) Paul Burke (BC) and Tim Godden (Ontario) co-facilitated a TNT event (Training for New Trainers) in Toronto with Denise Ernst (Oregon) and Carolina Yahne (New Mexico). The event was sponsored by CAMH (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health). At at the graduation we welcomed more than 30 new trainers into the MINT organization! Paul had previous professional associations with several of the crew at the CAMH event so it was a good time to reflect on "the good ol' days" (whenever that was!) If you are interested in learning more about our trainers mentorship program, please contact us.
